“I’m not loving people onto my path. I’m just loving people.”
True confession: As editor to NFL great Steve Young, this four-minute video clip from his audiobook recording was no surprise to me. I had worked with Steve to shape his words into his two books, The Law of Love and The Law of Love in Action. But watching this video just gives me a boost every time. I watch it from time to time just to get pumped again, to go out there just trying to love on people, everywhere I go. Here’s my favorite snippet:
“Even if we understand the idea that we should love people, we sometimes think we’re supposed to love them back onto our path instead of respecting their own journey. I’m not trying to love people into coming with me. I’m just loving people. No expectations, no transaction. They and God will figure out their journey; my job is to love them along the way” (Steve Young, The Law of Love, 11).
The next time you’re tempted to try to love people onto your path, take a deep breath, get humble, and get curious. Learn about their path, and let them live it. Then you just go out there and live YOUR path, expanding and growing in love for everyone and everything.
